ARTURAS CHOMENTAUSKAS
Founder / researcher
Prior to founding a research center Arturas Chomentauskas has been consistently following his childhood passion for astronomy, geology and exploration by spending many years privately studying Planetary Sciences, focusing on geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and meteoritics, achieving a high level of expeertise in these areas. Despite his deep personal interest, prolific experience, extensive fieldwork, and significant investment in these studies, he currently does not hold an academic degree in geology or Planetary Sciences. This is primarily due to the challenge of finding a suitable course or academic program that fits his professional schedule and personal obligations.
Nevertheless, Arturas Chomentauskas is committed to integrating his research goals and pursuing his vision. To achieve this efficiently, he founded "Focus Astrum," a private educational research center specializing in meteoritics and astro-mineralogy. The mission of “Focus Astrum” is to advance the study of meteorites and astro-mineralogy both in Lithuania and internationally, addressing the lack of scientific interest, research, and specialist researchers in this field within Lithuania. Notably, Lithuania has one of the shortest lists of classified meteorites globally, limited to a few observed falls in its history, with the last classification being the “Zemaitkiemis” observed meteorite fall over 90 years ago. In the meantime, no “finds” are known to be researched or classified.
Arturas Chomentauskas soon discovered that verification and classification of suspected meteorite finds locally are virtually impossible. The primary obstacles included a lack of interest from the local scientific community, the absence of active specialists in meteoritics, and a lack of transparent methodologies to evaluate and classify extraterrestrial materials.
These challenges catalyzed the establishment of the private research center. The need for alternative research avenues became more pressing as the stock of local finds and data about their extraterrestrial composition grew. Currently, after many years of personal fieldwork and material donations from enthusiasts, Arturas Chomentauskas has amassed a significant collection of local geological specimens, including at least six geochemically and/or petrologically verified meteorite finds from Lithuania (See currently published materials).
These specimens are currently being researched to the best capabilities of “Focus Astrum” with the aim of finally classifying them and including them in the official list of Lithuanian meteorites as recognized finds. In alignment with its primary goals, “Focus Astrum” also strives to promote equality, transparency, and public inclusivity.
